British Diplomacy: Bridging the Divide Between Israel and Iran
The UK has increasingly sought to mediate peace between Israel and Iran as the threat of an all-out conflict looms over the Middle East. UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, along with other British politicians, has urged both nations to resolve their differences peacefully. Meanwhile, domestic protesters in the UK have demanded that the government stop supplying weapons and technology to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) for use in Gaza and Southern Lebanon. Although these calls have largely been ignored, they have intensified political tensions over Britain’s support for Israel since the Israel-Hamas war began on October 7, 2023.
Britain Calls for Peace
UK politicians have increasingly campaigned for peace between Iran and Israel as the likelihood of conflict between the two nations grows. British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, in a telephone call with the new Iranian President, urged Iran to “refrain” from attacking Israel. Starmer warned President Masoud Pezeshkian that any attack on Israel would bear a “serious risk of miscalculation” and stressed the need for “calm and careful consideration.”
This 30-minute call coincided with a joint statement from France, Germany, the UK, and the U.S. urging Iran to end its threats against Israel.
This joint statement, released on the UK government website, stated that the four countries were deeply concerned by the heightened tensions in the region and that they were all united behind a “commitment to de-escalation and regional stability.” Additionally, the statement said that if Iran attacked Israel, it would bear the full responsibility for jeopardizing attempts at peace and stability.
