Desk Chief - Meridian News
Regional Flashpoints
Farmers across Europe are continuing to protest the import of cheap agricultural products from other nations. Poland is making moves to appease the farmers requesting EU sanctions on Russian and Belarusian agricultural products.
The United Nations is sending its Atomic Watchdog agency’s director to Russia to discuss Nuclear safety in Ukraine. Russia controls the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, and the U.N. wants to ensure that both Russia and Ukraine alike are committed to preventing a nuclear disaster even amidst the war.
Albania has rebuilt and recommissioned a former soviet airbase to serve NATO aircraft over mounting fear of Russian aggression and increase NATO presence in the region.
Notable Regional Updates
Russia has gained just under 134 km of Ukrainian territory since January of 2023 making significant gains around Avdiivka and Bakhmut.
Yemen’s Houthis announced they will continue targeting British ships in the Gulf of Aden, following the sinking of the UK flagged vessel “Rubymar” after it was struck by a missile in mid-February.
Russian media published a 38 minute long audio recording of Senior German military officials discussing the delivery of cruise missiles to Kyiv. While Russia likely didn’t learn anything new from the call, the information will likely further strain relations between Putin and the West.
Looking Forward/Implications
Similar to last week, farmers have been protesting for weeks across the E.U. Poland is making some effort to support its farmers but the sanctions requested could further frustrate Putin, who is already dissatisfied with the West’s response to his ongoing war in Ukraine.
Nuclear catastrophe at the Zaporizhia power plant is a very real concern for the E.U. The power plant is the largest in Europe, and Russia has maintained control of it since early in the war. The main concern is in the eventual restart of the powerplant, the E.U. wants to ensure all precautions are taken to avoid disaster.
Russia is steadily gaining small swaths of land in Western Ukraine despite Ukrainian resistance. As Spring approaches and things start to warm-up, Russia may attempt another offensive.
Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthis statement that they will continue attacking UK flagged ships has disrupted global shipping. Forcing many ships to reroute around the horn of Africa and raising additional concerns about the stability of the Middle East.
Russia’s learnings of German military officials discussing sending cruise missiles to likely isn't a surprise to them, but it does serve another purpose. It gives Putin more public justification to Russian citizens for his argument that the West is conspiring against him. It also gives him another instance to point to as he continues threatening the use of nuclear weapons in Ukraine.
