Overview

This past Sunday, a helicopter carrying Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi and Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian crashed in the mountainous region northeast of the city of Tabriz near the Iran-Azerbaijan border. Other notable passengers were killed in the crash as well, including a prominent imam and the governor of Iran’s East Azerbaijan Province. The incident, which occurred while the officials were returning from a trip to the Iran-Azerbaijan border was caused by a technical failure, according to Iran’s state media.
